Commentary

The Russian Foreign Minister’s visit to North Korea underscores Moscow’s growing desperation for Pyongyang’s support in its war against Ukraine.

As the conflict drags on and the Trump administration shifts toward stronger support for Ukraine, Putin’s need for military and logistical aid from North Korea has become increasingly urgent.

As we have repeatedly highlighted, Russia’s demands on North Korea will only intensify—and Kim Jong Un, having tied his regime’s survival to an alliance with Moscow, has little choice but to comply.

Despite public displays of solidarity, this so-called “strategic partnership” is inherently fragile. The reality is that the Russia-Ukraine war is steadily draining North Korea’s already limited resources and manpower. Sooner or later, the burden will reach a breaking point—one the Kim regime may not be able to withstand.

Especially, the North Korean military—the very institution that sustains the regime—may no longer tolerate the endless sacrifices demanded by both Putin and Kim.
