News Summary

The South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) said that North Korean soldiers fighting with Russian forces against Ukraine were withdrawn from the frontline Kursk region in mid-January because of significant casualties, citing Ukrainian and U.S. officials.

"Since mid-January, there have been no signs showing North Korean troops deployed to the Russian Kursk region engaging in battle," the NIS said.

According to the NIS, out of the estimated 11,000 troops deployed to Russia, around 300 are believed to have been killed, and approximately 2,700 others have been injured.

However, Seth Jones, the president of the Defense and Security Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), stated on Tuesday that as many as 50 percent of North Korean soldiers sent to Russia could be injured or killed in combat, as Moscow is engaging in "attrition" warfare that causes "heavy casualties."

Commentary

The withdrawal of North Korean forces from the frontline battlefield indicates significantly high casualties, which could correspond with Mr. Jones' estimate of up to 50% losses.

Regardless of the figures, it is clear that North Korea is suffering unexpected heavy casualties, leading its troops to retreat, even though the war continues.

This will greatly impact not only the troops dispatched to Russia but the entire North Korean society, where the news has already circulated.

According to Daily NK, the news of North Korean soldiers being deployed to Russia has caused significant concern in society, especially since some families are receiving military death notices for their enlisted children. North Korean parents are even offering substantial bribes to military recruitment officials to prevent their children from being drafted.

North Korea is experiencing and will continue to experience significant turmoil due to Kim Jong Un's decision to send his young soldiers to fight in a foreign war.

We will see how this shaking unfolds, even to the point of the collapse of the Kim regime.
